Dr. Phillip W. Magness is an economic historian specializing in the United States. He currently holds the David J. Theroux Chair in Political Economy at the Independent Institute.

Magness’ research has appeared in multiple scholarly venues, including the Economic Journal, the Journal of Political Economy, the Journal of Business Ethics, the Southern EconomicJournal, Social Science Quarterly, Public Choice, the Journal of the EarlyRepublic, the Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association, Slavery & Abolition, Constitutional Political Economy, theInternational Trade Journal, the Journal of Supreme Court History, and Liberal Education.

He is the author or co-author of several books, including “Cracks in the Ivory Tower: The Moral Mess of Higher Education,” “The 1619 Project: A Critique,” and “Colonization after Emancipation: Lincoln and the Movement for Black Resettlement.”
